Staying Cool This Summer with Help from Senior Village

Senior Village’s Helping Hands volunteers offer summer-specific services to keep members comfortable in extreme temperatures. Would you like to sit in the shade outside? Volunteers can move your patio furniture to minimize exposure to the sun, enabling you to enjoy the outdoors safely.

Member Kay C. scheduled Helping Hands Volunteer Mike DePrez to come and move her patio furniture. Kay joined Senior Village eighteen months ago. She shared that she doesn’t need help often, but when she does, the volunteers are friendly, outgoing, and quick to respond to requests. Kay also mentioned that, “It is better to ask for help than fall doing it yourself.”

Helping Hands team members can replace HVAC and water filters. They can also adjust or reseat sliding screen doors, striking a balance between ventilation and heat control, or patch a screen to ward off bugs and allow for a refreshing breeze to come inside.

Cooking outside helps keep the house cooler. Our volunteers can move or install propane tanks for your grill or outdoor fire pit. In addition, they can repair solar or low-voltage lighting to illuminate outdoor spaces, allowing members to enjoy their backyards without enduring the heat of the day.

Mike DePrez began volunteering with Senior Village in January. He enjoys meeting people. He shared, “I spend more time talking than doing the job. I like hearing members’ interesting stories, and I like the idea of neighbors helping neighbors.”
